Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Health, Wellbeing and Relationships

The strand Health, Wellbeing and Relationships focuses on students developing the knowledge, understanding and skills important for building respectful relationships, enhancing personal strengths and exploring personal identity to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others. Students develop strategies to manage change, challenges, power, abuse, violence and how to protect themselves and others in a range of situations.

Bounce Back! Program

The Bounce Back! Program is taught across K-6 to support students’ social and emotional learning. The program supports Botany PS to promote positive mental health, wellbeing and resilience and to build safe and supportive class and school learning environments. Topics covered in the program include courage, emotions and being safe.

Healthy, Safe and Active Lifestyles

These programs focus on the interrelationship between health and physical activity concepts. Students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to empower them to make healthy and safe choices and take action to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of their communities. They engage with a range of health issues and identify strategies to keep them healthy, safe and active.

Movement Skill and Performance

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Botany PS provides a range of sporting programs for our students. Including:

School Sport

All classes provide a PE program that focuses on developing fundamental movement skills. Students develop confidence and competence to engage in physical activity. They develop an understanding of movement concepts and the features of movement composition as they engage in a variety of planned and improvised movement experiences. Students create and compose movement to achieve specific purposes and performance goals. Through movement experiences students also develop self-management and interpersonal skills to support them to strive for enhanced performance and participation in a lifetime of physical activity.


Botany PS hosts swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals each year. 

Students are encouraged to become involved at a level with which they feel comfortable, and to extend this involvement to realise the potential harboured within each individual. Those children who exhibit particular talents in sport have access to representative sports at a number of levels, from school through to national.


PSSA is the interschool sporting competition that provide opportunities for primary students to participate in competitive sport.  Students in Year 3-6 can tryout for a team and if successful will represent the school every Friday in the Eastern Sydney PSSA competition.
